A key step towards strengthening Sweden’s energy infrastructure and supporting sustainable growth in Nykvarn.
Recap Energy is proud to announce a major milestone in the development of its Swedish energy storage portfolio. A Land Lease Agreement for a 12MW / 24MWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) has officially been signed and approved by Nykvarn Municipality, marking the final step needed to initiate project development.
The project, strategically located in Nykvarn’s growing green industrial area, Mörby, is set to significantly strengthen the local and national power infrastructure. Construction is scheduled to begin in mid-2025, with commissioning planned for Q1 2026.
This advanced energy storage system will play a vital role in balancing electricity supply and demand on the Swedish grid, offering backup power to critical infrastructure and supporting local industries during peak consumption periods. It also aligns with Sweden’s broader transition toward a more sustainable and reliable energy system.
“We are very pleased to finally see that we have all permits and contracts in place to start the development of this project,” says Jesper Svahn, Senior Project Manager at Recap Energy. “We’ve had strong support from Nykvarn Municipality and the local grid company, Telge Nät, throughout the application process. Close cooperation with municipalities and grid operators is essential for the success of these kinds of projects. I’m truly looking forward to taking this from vision to a fully operational system connected to the local grid.”, he adds.
”Developing and building energy storage projects connected to the DSO provides support to the local electricity grid needs without any investments by the DSO. Recap are happy to provide the Nykvarn Municipality with flexibility and resilience it needs in its expansion” says Marco Berggren, CEO Recap Energy.
“We in Nykvarn Municipality are pleased to welcome yet another company to our community, in the form of Recap Energy and their battery storage establishment,” says Emre Gürler, Establishment & Sales Manager at Nykvarn Municipality.
“Ensuring energy frequency stability and enabling peak shaving makes our green industrial zone in Mörby even more attractive for both current and future enterprises. This project is a key puzzle piece in our energy-environment cluster, where Recap Energy will become neighbors with industry leaders such as SEEL and Hydri.”
Adding to this, Märtha Dahlberg, Chairman of the Municipal Board at Nykvarn Municipality, emphasizes the importance of the project for the region’s sustainable growth:
“This is not just an investment in our municipality – it’s an investment in the future! We are very grateful that Recap Energy sees Nykvarn as an attractive place to invest and establish their operations. It strengthens our role as a growing and welcoming municipality with a clear focus on sustainable energy solutions and environmentally-driven initiatives.” — Märtha Dahlberg, Chairman of the Municipal Board, Nykvarn Municipality
This partnership reinforces Nykvarn’s commitment to smart, sustainable development and Recap Energy’s position at the forefront of the energy transition in Sweden.
